Shaun of the Dead
Chazz Noble
One of director Edgar Wright’s first and finest, the “zom-rom-com” story of a man who wants to get back with his girlfriend or at least keep her from being killed by zombies. The movie is wickedly hilarious with a great blend of humor, from dry to side-splitting. It also showcases Wright’s talent for subtle foreshadowing, with the entire plot of the film being laid out quite quickly. Featuring the dynamic duo of Nick Frost and Simon Pegg at their best, it’s a must-see.
Ghostbusters
Scott Fine
Do I even need to explain why this movie is so great? The dry, witty dialogue. The creative practical effects. The impeccable timing and pacing. Every element of this movie comes together to make a classic movie, where basically every scene is memorable.
Evil Dead 2
Scott Fine
While the first movie, Evil Dead, is a straight horror movie and the third movie, Army of Darkness, is a slapstick comedy, Evil Dead 2 is (ironically) stuck right in the middle. It has enough horror and gore to satisfy that itch but Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi have more than enough room for humor and insane visuals. While they had movies before this, this is the classic that made both Campbell and Raimi the beloved talent they are today!
Young Frankenstein
Becca Swezeny
Mel Brooks films are really a “watch whenever cause they’re freaking great” types of movies, but young Frankenstein makes a great Halloween movie. What much else do you want me to say? It’s a Mel Brooks film, starring Gene Wilder, there’s really not much better you can get. Follow Dr. Franken-STEEN, his assistant Igor, and lovely assistant Inga as they basically re-do the Universal Classic, Frankenstein. Seriously just go watch it...NOW!
Re-Animator
Gregg Mester
While is is a solid horror movie its also a pitch black comedy. Based on the Lovecraft story of the same name, Jeffry Combs plays an aspiring scientist trying to develop a formula to reanimate the dead. Can’t talk about too many specifics because that would spoil the best parts of the movie, so check it out!
What We Do in the shadows
Becca Swezeny
What We Do in the Shadows is one of my favorite comedy movies, and it also just happens to be about vampires and werewolves. The main joke is that we follow vampires in the modern (2014) era, but we also get glimpses into the rivalry between vampires and werewolves, their ebay shopping habits, and dating lives. Great for a fun night in halloween when you’re not looking for a scare.
Bubba Ho-Tep
Scott Fine
It’s Bruce Campbell as an elderly Elvis battling against a cowboy mummy, what more do you need? How about Ossie Davis as his sidekick President John F. Kennedy? Yeah this movie is insane but it’s so much fun. Seriously give it a shot if you’re in the moody for a different kind of horror-comedy movie this Halloween.
Trick or treat
Scott Fine
Metal is the most awesome of music styles. Horror is the most awesome of movie genres. What happens when you put them together? A pretty satisfying peanut butter and jelly sandwich...in movie form...this metaphor has really gotten away from me. But that dosen’t matter! Because this Halloween romp is kicked off when an outcast metal head accidentally summons the spirit of his deceased rock idol who then goes on to terrorize his school! Featuring Ozzy Ozbourne and Gene Simmons Trick or Treat is a raucous good time
Killer Klowns from outer space
Gregg Mester
You know whether or not this is a movie you want to see just by reading the title. With this movie you get exactly what you’re promised. Some clowns come down to earth from outer space and start killing people. It’s an inherently wacky and silly concept and it’s just as much fun to watch as you might think!
Tremors
Scott Fine
Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward must rally the small desert town of Perfection to battle against giant underground worms that hunt by sound. This movie has very impressive special effects, and amazing attention to detail, and a wonderfully off beat sense of humor. Truly one of the all time great monster movies!
Chopping Mall
Scott Fine
In this totally realistic mall setting, the security robots get struck by lightning and go on a killing spree. Too bad that the teenage employees are hanging out after hours and are now trapped with the now lethal security droids. This is clearly a very silly movie and it revels in it’s silliness. It should also be noted that this movie has one of the best head explosion in cinematic history, second only to Scanners!
Cabin in the woods
Gregg Mester
A bunch of teenagers played by people in their twenties go party in a cabin in the woods. We’ve all seen a million movies like this right? Well, Joss Whedon has taken this very tired concept in turned it on its head! This is a movie that is difficult to discuss without spoiling what makes it great. However, it is a loving send up to all classic movies the horror genre has to offer!
