A quick review of Twig would be that this is the Scottie Young-est book I’ve read in a while. If you don’t know Scottie Young, he’s best known as a cover artist for Baby Avengers and X-Men and generally draws cute disfigured superheroes, but outside of superheroes he’s a huge MAD magazine fan, and you can see how it inspired his art and style. It’s really hard to explain the Scottie Young style outside of his cute superhero art, but when you see it you know it has his influence (even if he isn’t the main artist on the book, that honor goes to Kyle Strahm). It’s cute with an edge of gross-ness and realistic flair that doesn’t take away from the cute characters but doesn’t make it too “kidy” in portrayal.
In the story of Twig we follow our main character, Twig, and his companion Splat, on their first day of their job as the Placeling. This is an important job, and we know this mostly because everything, including the giant mountain Twig works inside of, says so. Twig inherited the job after his father, the former Placeling, passed away suddenly. But now Twig must take up the mantle, which will lead him on a quest of discovery and adventure.
The book is described as Bone-esque in a Jim Henson’s Dark Crystal or Labyrinth type setting, and really they hit the nail on the head. Which is also why it’s so hard to describe, with weird in-world names such as Twig, Placeling, and Mount Guphin. But in the book it’s as natural as reading any other comic, you know the beats, you know where it leads, maybe the words and setting are fantastical, but you know an adventure when you see one.
There is so much to discover in the world of Twig and so much character to be seen from these unlikely heroes, Twig and Splat. I’m excited to read more into this world and see what adventures it has to offer. No spoilers, but the first issue leaves off on a cliffhanger that has me excited to see what comes next.
