Cosplay Confessions is a series we do to spotlight and get to understand the wonderful members of our cosplay community (and beyond!). This time we have the wonderfully talented Curious Cat Cosplay!
HOW DID YOU GET INTO COSPLAY?
I got into cosplaying through friends. I was a theater person and a geek and didn't realize you could have both costumes and geekery at the same time and once I heard about my friends trying this cosplay thing I knew it was for me.
WHY DO YOU LIKE COSPLAYING?
I like cosplaying because I think it's a great way to express my love for characters and be part of a community that feels the same way. I really enjoy costuming and the process of making myself look like the characters.
WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER(S) TO COSPLAY?
Catwoman is always a consistent favorite of mine, especially my comics suit. It's comfortable to wear all day and it looks great.
HOW DO YOU PUT TOGETHER YOUR COSTUMES?
I am a big fan of homebrewing costumes. I'll look at a bunch of references from all of their history and piece my favorite aspects together into one outfit that I feel fits their character. There are some suits I've done exactly cannon but that's really my favorite way to cosplay.
WHAT HAS BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE CONVENTIONS/EVENTS TO COSPLAY AT?
My favorite con so far has been ColossalCon East because it was literally a convention at a waterpark resort. It was much more relaxing and less intense than a lot of cons are and it was just what I needed. I'm about to go to my first NYCC though and I'm pretty excited about that, and also Katsucon early next year which has also been on my to-do list.
WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAY STORIES?
Pretty much any time I wear Supergirl every little girl in the area will run up and hug me and I start almost tearing up every time. I was just like them once and being a hero for them in that moment is one of the greatest feelings in the world.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU'VE HAD TO OVERCOME BEING A COSPLAYER?
The biggest challange I've overcome in cosplay has been really becoming comfortable with myself, especially with photography. Even a year ago I was extremely shy and barely ever had my picture taken so photographers coming at me with their huge DSLRs was super intimidating and I looked really scared in a lot of my early pics.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE IF THEY WERE INTERESTED IN GETTING INTO COSPLAY?
The best advice I can give to somebody going into cosplay is to do a character you love and pour your passion into it. You don't have to look exactly like them, or not even at all but if you love what you're doing it'll show.
WHAT CHARACTER WOULD YOU LOVE TO TACKLE SOMEDAY?
Two things: a character from Mass Effect, either Commander Shepard or Liara, and also Hawkgirl, preferably with moving wings. Those are my dream suits.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST COSPLAY ACHIEVEMENT?
I would say that my Poison Ivy suit has been my biggest cosplay achievement so far in terms of crafting. It was my first time trying applique and it was tricky but I felt very accomplished when I was done.
