Radio Apocalypse Preview and Review

From Ram V (Venom, Many Deaths of Laila Starr) and Anand Rk (Blue in Green, Gravity’s Wall)

“Good Morning Vietnam meets The Walking Dead. A post-apocalyptic epic about hope, survival, creativity, and, most of all, the power of music.”

“Long after the rock out of space struck the world and turned it all to dust, in Bakerstown stands the last Radio Station on the planet. Radio Apocalypse broadcasting into the unknown, a beacon in the dark for those who wander the lost places. Now change is coming to Bakerstown. Among the refugees flocking into an already precarious settlement, an orphan boy Rion, caught in an indiscretion, will twine his fate with the Radio Station. And in doing so, begin this mixtape of love and heartbreak and interminable hope. This soundtrack to the end of the world.”

Review

Set in an apocalypse, like a lot of books these days, Radio Apocalypse takes its focus to its characters and their interactions, which are generally my favorite type of apocalypse stories. We follow several characters as they navigate the wasteland, all bound by the one radio station left. Even as first issues go this is a gut-wrencher, following primarily a couple, Tan and Cali, who are attempting to make it to the safe haven before nightfall and the “Xinos” come out. Tan has to leave her partner behind who has a busted leg in hopes of reaching the town and getting help. I’ll leave the story for you to discover from there but it is a solid first issue with lots of emotion and lots of character development. Ram V is really rocking it lately with his amazing “Many Deaths of Lialah Starr” and even his first issue of “Venom” was a great story. I’m excited to see where we go from here in “Radio Apocalypse”.
